Thai Massage

Thai Massage is a traditional healing form of bodywork derived from the teachings of Ayurveda and Buddhism. It is believed to have been developed by Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha, physician to Buddha, more than 2,500 years ago in India and then travelled from India to Thailand where it has become an integral part of Thailand’s medical system, heavily influenced by Chinese Traditional Medicine.

Thais believe that energy channels flow through our body, called ‘Sen’ lines which have lots of similarities with the Chinese Qi meridians. Blockages and stagnation along these channels will result in pain and sickness. Good health and freedom from pain depend on the unrestricted flow of vital energy through the body.

Thai massage is also known as Thai Yoga Massage, and some people say that it is like doing yoga without any effort because the therapist moves you into a series of yoga-like stretches without any work on your part. The benefits are also said to be greater than doing yoga because the stretches can be much deeper than if you were actively engaged.

During a Thai Massage session, you lie on a padded mat on the floor. No oil is applied and you are fully dressed, wearing comfortable clothing.  The therapist applies a number of acupressure techniques using thumbs, fingers, palms, forearms, elbows, feet and knees together with yoga-like stretches and body rocking. All of these are aimed to open the energy lines, to stretch and compress muscles, and to mobilize joints, relieving muscular tension, enhancing blood circulation, increasing energy flow, making you feel deeply relaxed and energized.
